By ';too big';, do you mean there's not enough room for it, or that the diameter is larger than the tail piece from the sink?

If the issue is mismatched diameters, there are two sizes of drain pipe 1-1/2'; and 1-1/4';. Visually, it's hard to tell them apart. But when you go to install them, the larger size slip fitting won't make good seal on the smaller pipe. You'll have to either get a larger tail piece (the pipe that come off the sink) or a smaller trap.

You can get traps that have two different sizes on the inlet and outlet, as well as slip joints that are made to connect two different sizes of pipe. Sounds like you probably need one of the dual-sized traps. How do I install a bath faucet?
Get a plumbing book and read up on it
sounds like your p-trap is most likely 1-1/2 you need to go to a plumbing store and get an 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 trap adapter one end will go into your p-trap the other will allow the pop up drain pipe in it. This is if your p-trap is plastic. If it is a metal p-trap you can get a chrome extention. Go to your plumbing store and tell them what exactly you have they will be able to help you
no idea
