Here's a couple of links that may help you. They seem to be pretty good links. Hope it helps. My bath faucet keeps leaking?
unfortunately its not that easy. It depends on what type of faucet it is. You need to know the name brand of the faucet. Example: Moen, Delta, American Standard...so on and so forth. Also you will need to know if it is a single handle, two handle or a three handle faucet. There are many different types of faucet and each one contains different parts to make them operate. More than likely the last guy was right and all that it is, is the valve stem. Usually these are about three inches long and are easily replaced. More than likely it is no more than a bad gasket or o-ring but on occasion the entire stem will need to be replaced.

Study your faucet good before you go to the hardware and make sure you can identify it in a catalog if that is necessary. Knowing the name brand is a must.

Best of luck and God Bless.
Mostly likely the stem needs to have its washer replaced. you'd need to turn off your water, remove the handle, then remove the stem (you'll most probably need a stem puller or wrench), once removed you can go to a hw store and get new washers or simply replace the entire stem. Either way it 'should' be a cheap and quasi easy fix.
